Dr Kayleigh Garthwaite, author of Hunger pains: Life inside foodbank Britain, is a Leverhulme Trust funded researcher in the Centre for Health and Inequalities Research, Durham University, UK. Kayleigh explores issues of health inequalities, welfare reform, and austerity through ethnographic research. She is co-author of Poverty and insecurity: Life in 'low-pay, no-pay' Britain (Policy Press, 2012), winner of the 2013 British Academy Peter Townsend Award.

Hugh Atkinson is senior lecturer in politics at London South Bank University. He is the author of Local democracy, civic engagement and community: from New Labour to the big society (Manchester University Press, 2012). He is a founder member of the PSA specialist group on environmental politics.

Atkinson, Rowland
Rowland Atkinson is Chair in Inclusive Societies, in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield. His research crosses urban studies, sociology, geography and criminology and looks at different forms of exclusion and inequality. Among other interests his work has focused on questions of wealth and poverty in societies and the often invisible harms generated by social inequality in urban settings. Rowland lead the first study of gated communities in the UK as well as the first key study of the rich in London and continues to work to connect the lives of the affluent to social problems, he is the author of (with Sarah Blandy) Domestic Fortress. Sarah Ayres is Reader in Public Policy and Governance at the University of Bristol. She is a political scientist with expertise in public administration and theories of policy making. Her research is concerned with devolution and decentralisation in an international context, with a particular emphasis on analysing inter-governmental relations between central and local actors. This work has explored the role of partnership working and network management in the governance of territory.
