Deviance and inequality in Japan

Japanese youth and foreign migrants face stringent institutionalised controls in Japan. This book questions the efficacy of such social controls, focusing on the interrelation of inequality (powerlessness, discriminate controls and class inequality) and deviance (largely derived from power and the violation of informal and formal norms). It provides a comprehensive detailed description and explanation of inequality and deviance of Japanese youth and 17 foreign migrant groups. The book is aimed at individuals, students and academicians interested in Japan area studies.

"A useful contribution to the fields of deviance, juvenile delinquency, and social inequality." CHOICE

"Provides a comprehensive detailed description and explanation of inequality and deviance of Japanese youth and 17 foreign migrant groups." Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books

"In this groundbreaking work, Robert Yoder details Japan's diversity by examining seventeen groups, illustrating the linkages among inequality, deviance, and migration." Brian McVeigh, University of Arizona

"Yoder's unique contribution to the growing literature on inequality in Japan links the marginalization of working class Japanese youth and the treatment of foreign workers, including intriguing analyses of discriminatory treatment of foreign professional baseball players and the class and occupational hierarchy among foreign workers." Patricia Steinhoff, University of Hawaii at Manoa
