Open Access

Policy Press are proud to offer a range of Open Access options for our authors across books and journals. If you have specific requirements or can't find an answer to your question here, please email us.

Why publish open access?

  • Visibility & impact: Open access makes your research more widely and easily visible to researchers, practitioners and policy makers.
  • Usage: A number of studies and reports have shown that open access journal articles are viewed more often than articles available only to subscribers (See for example, this RCT published in the BMJ, or this report published by the Research Information Network).
  • Collaboration: Open access publication fosters greater dialogue across disciplinary and geographical boundaries.
  • Social Justice: Open access reduces inequalities in access to knowledge due to lack of institutional funding.
Policy Press journals comply with the majority of funding agency mandates for Open Access publication of work they support.

Green Open Access archiving has already been possible for some time, for more information see our policy on self-archiving and institutional repositories. We understand that different funding bodies have different requirements so we are willing to be flexible - please email us to discuss your needs.

Gold Open Access publishing (making articles freely available to the reader under a variety of CC-BY licences) is also available upon payment of an Article Processing Charge of £1,500+VAT. The Open Access status of an article in no way influences its chance of acceptance or review, and payment should only be made after acceptance. In order to make your article Gold Open Access, please contact us ( to request an invoice and confirm the licence you would like applied to your article. UK customers can pay by credit card online if they prefer, by visiting our online shop.

Please note we are unable to process refunds for Article Processing Charges, including in the event of article retraction or later removal. We do, however, ensure that Policy Press does not charge twice for the same article, and will fully refund an APC in the event of duplicate payment.
