Comparing Regional Organizations

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution and particularities of regional organizations across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe since 1945.

The authors analyze the membership dynamics and policy scopes of 76 organizations, and compare their opportunities and challenges in regional governance. They consider organizations’ competencies in eleven different policy areas, including trade, security and environment, and trace patterns in their development.

For those with interests in comparative regionalism, international relations, political science and international law, this is an essential companion to some of the world’s most significant organizations.

“Provides a comprehensive analysis of regional organizations’ competencies and membership development - a highly original contribution.” Christof Hartmann, University Duisburg-Essen

“This short but rigorous book masters an enormous task with elegance and precision, opening many new pathways for research on comparative regionalism and international organizations.” Fredrik Söderbaum, University of Gothenburg

“This book is a timely contribution to the discussion about regionalism worldwide and provides a comprehensive and insightful analysis about global trends and regional particularities of regional organizations´ trajectories.” Andrea Ribeiro Hoffmann, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro

“A most valuable resource on the changing competences and membership of regional international organizations. Comprehensive and up to date.” Liesbet Hooghe, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and European University Institute

“This book provides a much-needed contribution to comparative research on regional organizations. Grounded in a rich data collection and a simple yet effective typology, it successfully reconciles a focus on regional particularities with the study of trends that span the world.” Thomas Sommerer, Stockholm University
